In the list of these top breeds is Brigadier General Dr. Otuanovwe Oviemo Felix Otu Ovadje (Retd.). He is a globally acclaimed Nigerian military medical doctor, researcher, and inventor. He served a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army Medical Corps, rising through the ranks to be decorated as a Brigadier General in 2003.

General Ovadje was a Chief Consultant Anaesthesiologist and Intensive Care Physician. During his active service, he was primarily stationed at the Military Hospital, Ikoyi, in Lagos. Ovadje conceptualised the EAT-SET to tackle high mortality rates from internal bleeding, particularly during instances like ruptured ectopic pregnancies. The EAT-SET is a mechanical, non-electric blood auto-transfusion system. It safely recovers a patient’s own internally spilled blood from body cavities during trauma or surgery and filters it for immediate re-transfusion. Because it does not require electricity, it became a lifesaver in rural clinics across sub-Saharan Africa. He successfully patented the device in nine countries, with backing from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

His work earned global recognition, helping shift international perspectives on indigenous African scientific innovation: OAU/WIPO Gold Medal (1995): Named the Best African Scientist in front of African heads of state after winning the World Intellectual Property Organisation award. WHO Sasakawa Health Prize (2000): He made history as the first African winner of this prestigious global health award.: He was named an Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) by the Nigerian government for professional excellence.
