Professor Muminu Osumah Adamu is an accomplished academic, researcher, administrator, and internationally recognized scholar in Statistics, Operations Research, Mathematical Statistics, Probability Theory, Data Science, and Optimization. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Statistics, University of Lagos, Nigeria, with over two decades of distinguished experience in teaching, research, academic administration, and professional service.
Professor Adamu obtained his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mathematics/Statistics, M.Sc. in Statistics, and Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Lagos. Over the years, he has established himself as one of Nigeria’s leading scholars in Operations Research, Statistical Modelling, Optimization, Machine Learning Applications, and Probability Distribution Theory.
He has taught extensively at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, delivering courses in Probability Theory, Statistical Inference, Operations Research, Regression Analysis, Design of Experiments, Mathematical Statistics, Statistical Computing, Stochastic Processes, Machine Learning Applications, and Optimization. He has successfully supervised hundreds undergraduate projects, numerous master’s dissertations, and several doctoral theses across diverse areas of statistics, operations research, data science, public health, finance, and machine learning.
Professor Adamu’s research contributions span Mathematical Statistics, Probability Theory, Data Science, Operations Research, Optimization, Scheduling Theory, Machine Learning, and Generalized Probability Distributions. He has published extensively in reputable national and international journals and has presented scholarly papers at major conferences across Africa, Europe, and the United States of America. His current research focuses on the development of novel probability distributions, artificial intelligence applications, machine learning, optimization algorithms, and scheduling problems.
A distinguished academic leader, Professor Adamu has held several strategic leadership positions within the University of Lagos. He has served as Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Science, Acting Dean, Postgraduate Coordinator, Member of the University Senate, Chairman of numerous academic committees, and Head of both the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics. His leadership has significantly contributed to academic development, quality assurance, curriculum advancement, and institutional governance within the University system.
Professor Adamu is a Fellow of the Institute of Operational Research and Management Science of Nigeria (FIORMS) and a foundation member of the Institute. He currently serves as a Council Member of the Institute of Operational Research and Management Science of Nigeria (IORMS) and as the Vice President of the Operations Research Society of West Africa (ORSWA). He is also an active member of several prestigious professional and academic organizations, including the Science Association of Nigeria (SAN), the Nigerian Mathematical Society (NMS), the Nigeria Statistical Association (now Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria), the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), the INFORMS Society on Applied Probability, the INFORMS Society on Optimization, the INFORMS Forum on Education (INFORMS-ED), and the Association of Mathematical Sciences and Optimization.
In addition to his academic and professional engagements, Professor Adamu has served as editor and reviewer for several reputable local and international journals and has contributed immensely to the advancement of scholarship, research mentorship, and professional practice in Statistics and Operations Research. He has also served on numerous university and national committees, providing leadership and strategic direction in higher education administration and professional development.
Professor Muminu Osumah Adamu is widely respected for his intellectual depth, academic excellence, administrative competence, mentorship, and commitment to national development. His scholarly contributions and professional leadership continue to influence the advancement of Statistics, Operations Research, Data Science, and Higher Education in Nigeria and beyond.
